The Bird and the Golden Cage: Chapter 9

Chapter 9

Author: Mr. Big Horn

Still uneasy, Yan Zhen pretended to casually ask on the way back, “You drew a lot of pictures of this guy. Is he your boyfriend?”

“Huh?” Su Jinxin hadn’t expected Yan Zhen to ask that. He paused, then quickly shook his head. “No, he’s not.”

Yan Zhen could tell he was probably telling the truth. But if that was the case, why was he blushing?

Yan Zhen’s curiosity was almost unbearable.

But seeing Su Jinxin hiding half his face behind his bag, blushing and sneaking glances, Yan Zhen sensed that pressing the matter would only embarrass him further, so he kept his questions to himself.

Before long, Yan Zhen had something more urgent to deal with.

He had an allergic reaction.

The usually invincible, fearless, and highly competent President Yan, who could supposedly do anything, had an allergic reaction.

Su Jinxin noticed it after dinner: red rashes, not painful or itchy, scattered across Yan Zhen’s chest, back, and arms.

Yan Zhen didn’t need a doctor to figure it out. It was likely because the clothes he wore that afternoon contained synthetic materials. He never wore such cheap clothes directly on his skin, and his skin wasn’t used to it. It was no big deal.

But Su Jinxin panicked.

Frowning and squinting, he hovered his hand over the rashes, wanting to touch but not daring to. “What happened? Why is it like this? Does it itch? Does it hurt? Are you uncomfortable?”

Yan Zhen caught his hand and casually explained the cause, intending to show it wasn’t serious and not worth the fuss.

Unexpectedly, Su Jinxin became even more anxious. “This is my fault. Why did I convince you to wear… No, we need to see a doctor right away…” He tried to stand up to find the housekeeper, despite his own injured knee.

Yan Zhen pulled him back into his arms. “No need to rush.”

“But…”

“Not listening?” Yan Zhen raised an eyebrow.

Su Jinxin immediately fell silent and still.

Yan Zhen sighed, ruffling Su Jinxin’s hair. “I’m not angry. Just listen to me, okay?”

Su Jinxin nestled against his chest, avoiding the rashes, and nodded obediently.

“Look, if you tell Uncle Lin now,” referring to the housekeeper, “everyone here will know. Then they’ll notify the main house, and my sister, brother, and even my mom will all come by with their doctors. It’ll be a huge fuss, and no one in this house will sleep tonight. Uncle Lin is over fifty, and Aunt Zhang and Aunt Ye in the kitchen are also elderly. You never bother them after dinner, even if you’re hungry. Now, for something this small, would you want to cause such a commotion?”

Yan Zhen said this deliberately, knowing Su Jinxin hated causing trouble for others.

Sure enough, Su Jinxin shook his head quickly. “No, of course not…” But after a moment’s silence, he couldn’t help but say, “But you…”

“We can secretly call a doctor. It won’t delay the treatment and won’t make a big fuss. How about that?” Yan Zhen asked softly.

Su Jinxin nodded eagerly.

Yan Zhen continued, “But I need your cooperation.”

Yan Zhen pretended that Su Jinxin had hurt his knee earlier and called a familiar family doctor.

He personally went downstairs to greet the doctor and only explained the real situation once they were in the room.

The doctor nearly exploded. He made Yan Zhen undress for a thorough check and identify the allergen. When Yan Zhen showed the clothing, the doctor’s eyes nearly popped out. “Where did you find this trash? Performance art?”

Dr. Zhou, the son of the hospital director who was also the Yan family’s doctor for three generations, had grown up with Yan Zhen and spoke candidly.

Su Jinxin, who had been quietly shrinking in the corner, tried to stay unnoticed but looked worriedly at Yan Zhen. Hearing the doctor, his face turned pale, and he bit his lip, looking down.

Noticing this, Yan Zhen quickly took the blame. “I saw someone at the company wearing it and thought it was interesting, so…”

“Young Master Yan,” Dr. Zhou sighed in frustration, “please don’t give me such headaches in the future. I’m very busy. If you think it’s interesting, add three zeros to the price and get something similar, or ask Master Qian to make a copy.” Master Qian was the tailor who made Yan Zhen’s clothes. “This time it’s not serious. I’ll prescribe some medicine. If it doesn’t improve in three days, come to the hospital.”

Yan Zhen nodded at everything Dr. Zhou said.

He escorted Dr. Zhou out, but once the door closed, the doctor asked, “Wasn’t it your idea to wear that, right?”

Yan Zhen didn’t answer, just gave a sheepish smile.

Dr. Zhou frowned. “You need to be more careful. Does your mom or sister know?”

“I’m just taking care of someone. They don’t mind.”

“This seems like more than just ‘taking care of someone,’ doesn’t it?” Dr. Zhou knew Yan Zhen well and had heard rumors from friends. “Wouldn’t it be better to tell your family and settle things?”

“If he’s willing,” Yan Zhen replied.
